We have all heard about 5G, and the next-gen network has been rolling out everywhere. You may have heard that 5G will connect everything wirelessly at blazing speeds. While we’re not there yet, the potential is there, and our 5G network is improving every day.
Recently, T-mobile officially launched a home internet service over its 5G network. T-mobiles home internet service will bring speeds of 100Mbps to 30 million households. If you’re in a rural area and struggle to find a quality home ISP (Internet Service Provider), switch to T-mobile now as they say 10 million of the 30 million households will be in rural areas.
T-mobile has been running a pilot home ISP over the past year, primarily over 4G LTE, that cost $50 per month at its launch. Now that the service has launched over 5G, it will cost $60 per month on autopay, or $65 per month without autopay set up. Important for many is that the service comes with no data caps, hardware rental fees, or annual contracts. T-Mobile will send you the hardware that customers can easily install themselves.
Another important factor to consider is speed. Many of us have increased our demand on our home internet over the past year with the large push to work-from-home, children doing more online school and lessons, and an increase in streaming while spending more time at home. T-Mobile says that customers will find speeds of up to 100Mbps while Dow Draper, EXP of emerging products at T-Mobile has said that “most customers will experience average speeds over 100Mbps.” There is a caveat to this being that home internet customers may experience data slowdowns during high usage times (network congestion), which may turn away customers that live in densely populated markets.
Some of us have several options when it comes to our home ISP, but many of us only have one option, often leaving those with expensive internet that lacks quality. It may surprise you to learn that according to the U.S. Census’s American Community Survey, 29.2 percent of all households lack access to broadband service (slate.com). T-Mobile providing home internet over 5G helps to fill this gap and bring options to internet users stuck with a lackluster ISP.
There has been a lot of talks about Starlink as of late. T-Mobile will bring competition to the growing Starlink, bringing service and options to internet users everywhere (eventually). Star Link is more expensive at $99 per month and $499 for its base station. T-Mobile does not look at it so much as competition, feeling that Starlink is more of an additive in a market starved for choice.
Now more into the details on where T-Mobile will be providing their home internet service. T-Mobile home internet service will be available to T-Mobile customers that have 5G coverage where there is sufficient excess capacity for the network to provide home internet and not slow down the mobile network. T-Mobile will be providing their home ISP on a first-come, first-serve basis, bringing on more home internet users as the capacity of their networks increase.
